The only correspondence was a letter two years ago

The second son of Myanmar’s detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is growing more concerned about her health. And he says the international community should do more to secure her release.

UK-based Kim Aris spoke to NHK on Friday. He says a letter from his mother more than two years ago is the only correspondence he has received from her since the military seized power in 2021.

唯一の連絡は2年以上前の手紙

英国在住のキム・アリス氏は12日、NHKの取材に応じ、2021年の軍事政権掌握以降、母から受け取った唯一の連絡は2年以上前の手紙だけだと明かした。ミャンマーで拘束されている民主化運動指導者アウンサンスーチー氏の次男が、彼女の健康状態をますます懸念している。国際社会は彼女の解放に向け、より一層の努力をすべきだと訴えた。

Aris also says none of Aung San Suu Kyi’s family members or lawyers have been allowed to see her.

He called for his mother’s immediate release, saying that she has heart disease and that her condition may have worsened.

アリス氏はまた、アウンサンスーチー氏の家族や弁護士の面会が一切許可されていないと指摘。心臓病を患う母の容体が悪化している可能性を挙げ、即時解放を訴えた。

Prison in Naypyidaw damaged by earthquake

Aris says the prison where his mother is being held was damaged in a powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar in March. He also says it is highly likely that she was hurt.

アリス氏によれば、母親が収監されている刑務所は3月にミャンマーを襲った大地震で損傷した。また、彼女が負傷した可能性が極めて高いとも述べた。

Aris said he would like the international community to do more for her release. He named China, India and current Association of Southeast Asian Nations chair Malaysia as countries that could help.

アリス氏は、国際社会が彼女の解放に向けてより多くの行動を起こすことを望んでいる。中国、インド、そして現在の東南アジア諸国連合（ASEAN）議長国であるマレーシアが支援できる国として名指しした。

A spokesperson for Myanmar’s military said last week that Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health.

一方、ミャンマー軍の報道官は先週、アウン・サン・スー・チー氏の健康状態は良好だと発言している。
