What’s happening on the ground

On March 28, 2025, Myanmar was hit by a devastating Magnitude 7.7 earthquake. This was added to the country’s suffering of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, followed by a cruel military coup in 2021.  Since then, the economy has collapsed, food and commodity prices are soaring, there has been vast flood damage and brutal war, including air raids and the burning of houses by the military. 

In places hardest hit by the quake, buildings have collapsed, roads have been buried in rubble, many lives have been lost, and many remain unaccounted for. Those lives could have been saved with a functioning emergency preparation system. Unlike Japan, Myanmar does not have this type of system, and the current military regime is not capable of saving the people in need. With the civil war still going on, the military currently has control over only one-third of the country.

地震発生後のミャンマー

　2025年3月28日、ミャンマーはマグニチュード7.7の壊滅的な地震に見舞われました。2020年に始まったパンデミック、2021年の軍事クーデター以来、経済は崩壊し、食料などの物価は高騰、広範囲にわたる洪水被害、軍による空襲や家屋の焼失など激しい戦争が続中での出来事です。

　地震の被害が最も大きかった地域では、建物が倒壊、道路は瓦礫で埋まり、多くの命が失われ、今もなお多くの行方不明者がいます。緊急事態への備えが機能していれば、救えた命もあるはずですが、日本とは異なり、ミャンマーには備えがなく、軍事政権は困っている国民を救うことができません。そもそも内戦が続く現在、軍が掌握しているのは国内の3分の1程度です。

Survivors facing difficulties

Thousands of survivors are forced to sleep under plastic sheets or nothing at all on the roads while the temperature rises to 40 degrees Celsius. The survivors are struggling during the day with dusty air, sweat, and the stench of death. The country is without running water, little communications, and no power. People are living in fear, having nightmares, suffering from PTSD and depression, all that we can imagine and relate to from Japan’s experience with earthquake disasters.

In the midst of all this, the junta continues to attack civilians and has even bombed areas where the earthquake struck, making the horrible situation worse.  Local charities, NGOs, churches, and individuals are helping out in every way possible, but the crisis is too vast for locals to handle. The people of Myanmar need all the help they can get just to survive and care for the people’s most basic needs of food, shelter, and medicine. Additionally, the country will need help rebuilding people’s lives. 

困難に直面する 被災者

　残った被災者たちは、気温が40℃まで上昇する中、ビニールシートまたは何も敷かずに道路での寝泊まりを余儀なくされています。埃っぽい空気、汗、死臭の中で、苦しんでいます。水道は止まり、通信手段は限られ、電力もありません。

　このような状況下で、軍事政権は依然として被災地を攻撃するなど、悲惨な状況をさらに悪化させています。 地元の慈善団体、NGO、教会、個人が可能な限りの支援を行っていますが、危機的状況があまりにも広範にわたっているため、地元だけでは対処しきれません。生き延びるための食料、住居、医薬品といった基本的なニーズを満たすためのあらゆる支援が必要とされています。また、今後の復興のための支援も必要です。

Impact in Chin State, Hualngoram

On the day of the earthquake, Heartship Myanmar Japan contacted Hualngoram, Chin State, where we have been aiding children’s education since 2022. We were relieved to hear that the earthquake did not affect this area and that all the children and staff were safe.

チン州 ホゥアルンゴラム地域での影響

　地震当日、2022年より子どもの教育支援を行っているチン州ホゥアルンゴラム地域に連絡を取りました。この地域では地震の影響はなく、子どもたちとスタッフ全員の無事が確認でき、安心したところです。

The need to donate to local organizations

Knowing that Myanmar will need all the help it can get to recover, we are calling for donations via our website and beyond.

In our usual projects, we work directly with staff on the ground. Unfortunately, with this earthquake, our contacts are either one of the victims or located too far away. Therefore, we will send our collected donations to a local NGO in Myanmar. We are currently in the process of selecting a reliable organization.

Many large NGOs have also been calling for donations, which is good news. However, it is also true that many of those donations may go directly to the military government (the current official government that the Japanese government is working with) and not reach the people in need.

We ask you to please donate to organizations that are connected to local groups. 

地元の団体への寄付の必要性

　ミャンマーが復興に向けてあらゆる支援を必要としていることを踏まえ、HMJホームページやコミュニティ・サイトを通じて寄付を呼びかけています。

　通常の支援活動では現地のスタッフと直接協力していますが、残念ながら今回の地震では、スタッフも被害者、または遠方にいます。そのため、集まった寄付金はミャンマーの地元のNGOに託す予定です。現在、信頼のおける団体を選定しているところです。

　多くの大手NGOも寄付を募っており、これは朗報です。しかし、それらの寄付金の多くが軍事政権（日本政府が協力している現政権）に直接渡り、困っている人々に届かない可能性があることも事実です。

　どうか、現地組織とつながりのある団体に寄付していただくようお願い致します。
