UNICEF（国連児童基金）は19日、ミャンマー北部ザガイン地方域の街タバインが16日にミャンマー軍の襲撃を受け、少なくとも子供11人が死亡、15人が行方不明になったと発表した。
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced that at least 11 children were killed and 15 others are missing after the Myanmar military attacked the town of Tabayin in the Sagaing region of northern Myanmar on September 16.
タイの公共放送タイPBSなどによると、ミャンマー軍のヘリコプターが学校や住宅に向け機関砲を発砲し、生徒や教員、住民ら多数が死傷した。その後、住民らが避難した僧院に、数十人のミャンマー軍兵士が乗り込み、銃を乱射。生き残った住民らの一部を連行したという。
According to Thai public broadcaster Thai PBS, a Myanmar military helicopter fired machine guns at a school and houses, killing and wounding many students, teachers, and residents. Dozens of Myanmar soldiers then boarded a monastery where the residents had taken refuge, and opened fire. Some of the surviving residents were taken away.
ミャンマーでは2020年11月に総選挙が実施され、アウン・サン・スー・チー国家最高顧問兼外相率いる与党・国民民主連盟（NLD）が勝利した。選挙で大敗したミャンマー軍は翌2021年2月にクーデターを起こし、アウン・サン・スー・チー最高顧問ら政権幹部の身柄を拘束し、実権を掌握。その後、クーデターに抗議する市民らを武力で弾圧し、これまでに2000人以上を殺害したとされる。
Myanmar held general elections in November 2020, and the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi won. The Myanmar military, which suffered a crushing defeat in the election, staged a coup d’état in February 2021, detained Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior government officials, and seized power over the country. The Myanmar military has been using force to suppress citizens protesting the coup, reportedly killing more than 2,000 people to date.
