Myanmar military attacks school; 11 killed, 15 missing ミャンマー軍襲撃で子ども11人死亡、15人不明

A school has been targeted in Myanmar where the military continues to attack its people. Various media including NHK has been reporting the news. This is an English translation from (Sagaing is located next to Chin state, where Heartship Myanmar Japan supports education.)


The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced that at least 11 children were killed and 15 others are missing after the Myanmar military attacked the town of Tabayin in the Sagaing region of northern Myanmar on September 16.

According to Thai public broadcaster Thai PBS, a Myanmar military helicopter fired machine guns at a school and houses, killing and wounding many students, teachers, and residents. Dozens of Myanmar soldiers then boarded a monastery where the residents had taken refuge, and opened fire. Some of the surviving residents were taken away.

Myanmar held general elections in November 2020, and the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi won. The Myanmar military, which suffered a crushing defeat in the election, staged a coup d’état in February 2021, detained Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior government officials, and seized power over the country. The Myanmar military has been using force to suppress citizens protesting the coup, reportedly killing more than 2,000 people to date.
