In July, Satawm School was occupied by CNDF soldiers, leaving behind serious damage to the property. On top of this, many of the school’s benches and tables were already more than 50 years old, hand-carved and worn down from decades of use.
今年7月、サタウム校はCNDF兵に占拠され、校舎や備品に大きな被害を受けました。さらに、校内の机やベンチの多くは50年以上前に手彫りで作られたもので、長年の使用によりすでに老朽化していました。
Request from Satawm for school benches and tables
Before the invasion, the school had 24 student benches and 27 student tables. CNDF destroyed 10 benches and 10 tables, and the remaining ones are either broken or too old to last much longer. Students are forced to share 3–4 per table, making it difficult to study. The school committee reached out to HMJ to order new benches and tables for classrooms.
Satawm is the first school HMJ helped reopen in 2022, and it is also the village where Sawmi’s parents grew up. With this deep connection, HMJ agreed to fund 20 student desks, 20 student benches, and 8 teacher’s tables.
サタウム校から 教室のベンチなど新調の依頼
侵攻前、同校には生徒用ベンチが24台、生徒用机が27台ありました。しかしCNDFによってそれぞれ10台が破壊され、残りも壊れているか古すぎて長くは使えません。現在は1つの机を3〜4人で共有しており、学習環境は非常に厳しい状況です。そこで学校委員会は、教室用の新しい机とベンチをHMJに依頼しました。
サタウム校は、2022年にHMJが最初に再開を支援した学校であり、ソウミの両親が育った村でもあります。この深いつながりから、HMJは生徒用机20台、生徒用ベンチ20台、教師用机8台を新たに作る支援を決定しました。
Funds Sent & Received
On September 17, HMJ sent ¥180,000 or 5,042,000 MMK from Japan to cover timber, nails, and carpenter fees. Since there is no bank in Satawm, the money was transferred via K-pay, which only allows 400,000 MMK per day.
Villagers traveled two hours by bike to Tio to collect the funds in two separate trips and delivered them directly to the Satawm School Education Committee.
資金の送金と受け渡し
9月17日、HMJは日本から18万円（5,042,000 MMK）を送金しました。費用には木材、釘、大工の人件費が含まれています。サタウムには銀行がないため、送金はK-payを通じて行われました。1日の送金上限は40万MMKであるため、2日間に分けて送金されました。
村人たちはバイクで2時間かけてTioまで行き、資金を2回に分けて受け取り、サタウム校に直接届けました。
Timber cutting begins in a neighboring village
On September 25, the timber work officially began! We received photos and videos of men cutting trees and preparing wood to make the benches and desks.
The trees are not from Satawm itself, but from Chawng Hoih, a neighboring village about 30 minutes away by bike. Each village has its own territory, and the tree-cutting process follows a local system:
- The worker looks for strong, suitable trees and purchases them.
- The trees are cut down and processed into timber.
- The timber is then delivered to the customer — in this case, the Satawm School Education Committee.
隣村で木材の伐採がスタート
9月25日、材木の作業が正式に始まりました！現地からは、机やベンチを作るために木を伐採し、材木を準備する様子の写真や動画が届いています。
伐採された木はサタウムではなく、バイクで約30分の距離にある隣村チョンホイの区域のものです。各村にはそれぞれの区域があり、伐採から納品までの流れは次のようになっています。
- 適した木を探し、購入する
- 木を伐採し、材木に加工する
- 加工された材木を顧客に届ける （今回の場合サタウム校教育委員会)
This project is not only about replacing old furniture — it’s about giving students a more comfortable and practical environment where they can sit, write, and learn. With the work now underway, we look forward to seeing Satawm’s classrooms become a better place for children to study every day.
このプロジェクトは、ただ古い家具を新しくするだけではなく、生徒たちにより快適で実用的な学習環境を整えるものです。作業が進むことで、サタウム校の教室が子どもたちにとって毎日安心して学べる場になっていくことを楽しみにしています。
